We are going to have about 150 IP cameras set up around our site, they are just cheap china cameras off Amazon, Huacam or Foscom I believe. We originally were going to use multiple PCs with Blue Iris camera software to do the recording, but after using Blue Iris for a small site, I think there's probably something better out there for this.

Can anyone recommend a good open NVR system? It's a shame we already purchased the cameras, I just found Ubiquit's line of cameras and NVR and that would have worked perfect. Is there anything similar that can work with multiple IP camera brands?

I don't know why you would have thought Ubiquiti would have been perfect. They are closed, non-conforming to industry standard protocols or even 802.3af or.at power at the camera. Your cheap China brands are probably just as good. BlueIris and Ubiquiti market their products heavily to the IT crowd because they are not very good professional grade cameras and recording systems that would make it the security world. There are however many good and open platform (not open source) NVR systems out there that are professional grade and proven in the industry. To name a few are: Geutebruck (which we sell, but is very high end), Video Insight, DVTel, Exacq Vision, Milestone, OnSSI, Genetec, Mirasys, DW Spectrum (NetworkOptix), ipConfigure.

Foscom is on some of their compatibility lists. You'll have to look up each system and check their HCL, and be aware not all camera features will be supported on every model, so check the matrix carefully.

D'Link is another budget model that I think is as low as many go. More professional grades in varying levels of quality are are Sony, Bosch, Arecont, Pelco, Axis, Panasonic, Ganz, ACTi, Vivotek. In this case you bought cheap china knock off brands( good luck getting support for those). Some of the fun extras you can enjoy at no extra cost to you are: 1.

Worst if non-existent support 2. 30 day replacement warranty from time of purchase ( not from when they arrive into your hands) 3.

Poor documentation unless you speak/read 4 different types of chinese or south korean. If connect to the internet auto- linking to multiple spy servers ( because some people just like to watch) 5. So far as open source VMS there is only 2 that 'work' and I use that term loosely, Zoneminder and ispyconnect.

Both have there pros and cons with more cons than pros usually. If i had to chose you may do better with ispyconnect because they at least have people you can pay for support, Unlike Zoneminder. Zoneminder is actually a better functioning piece of software its just poorly put together due to lack of leadership and the lack of will to change core components of Zoneminder. ( actuall response from head developers 'we know its junky code but we don't want to rewrite it, we will just add to it and fix it the best we can'. It comes in 2 versions both of which are feature rich. The community version is completely free and has no restrictions as to how many cameras you can add.
